Acro

Ages: 4+ / Class length: 1 hr.
Acrobatic and dance combined in a challenging, fun, and safe environment

*A technique/foundations, ballet, or jazz class is highly recommended.

Acro (short for acrobatics) is a combination of both dance and gymnastics technique, creating smooth and fluid transitions between dance and acro skills.  Acro is differs from a gymnastics floor routine with more dance technique, and each movement is carefully connected to the next. Skills such as headstands, elbow stands, cartwheels and walkovers are learned in the beginning, with students also focusing on tricks with partners and groups. As students become more advanced, they also work up to skills such as aerials and handsprings. Acro focuses on increasing strength, flexibility, and creating fluid dance pieces.

Class consists of warm up, stretching and strengthening exercises, conditioning, across the floor dance moves, circuits, acro stands, and across the floor skills, as well as combinations and choreography.

Baby Ballet/Ballet Foundations

Ages 3-5 / Class length: 30 min.
Students learn the foundation and fundamentals of ballet in a fun and creative way.

Ballet-

A classical dance form backed by strong technique and structure. Ballet teaches fluidity, grace, agility, and precision of movement with much discipline and persistence. Ballet dancers develop both strength and flexibility over time, and have the ability to make difficult movements look easy. Ballet, however, is not an easy technique to master and takes much repetition of exercises and years of practice to perfect.

A traditional ballet class structure is rigid in its technique. It consists of barre work, centre exercises and across the floor, all working towards choreographed routines. Through the use of a graded curriculum, ballet is designed to help each student strive toward a goal that he or she is capable of. The challenges of this disciplined technique are both mentally and physically rewarding.

For the more serious student, examination classes are offered. Students interested in examinations are required to attend 2 classes a week. Students are tested on their ability to properly execute a number of specifically choreographed exercises that emphasize a particular ballet movement as well as their knowledge of the theory and terminology.

Class consists of a warm-up at the barre, strengthening and stretching exercises, centre work, across the floor, combinations, and choreography.

Ballet is the foundation of dance disciplines and is required for Full Time Company Members, strongly recommended for Part-Time Company Members as well as students hoping to join the Element Dance Company.

Creative self-expression and a more natural way to move – a more free style of dance where emotions and moods lead the dance, with a deliberate use of gravity (where ballet is more rigid in its technique). Modern was developed as a rebellion to those rigid constraints of traditional ballet. Contemporary is today’s modern dance, a fusion of both traditional modern and jazz technique.
